Henderson County American Legion Post 77 had a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Nathan Hyatt, as it held off Newell 12-11 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Area IV playoffs at Independence High in Charlotte. Michael Lolley followed up Hyatt’s big hit with a two-run single to give Henderson County a 12-9 lead.

Newell answered with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Hyatt took the hill and secured the victory with his third save of the season. Cody Owens picked up the win for Post 77 (11-10-1), which will host Newell at 7 p.m. tonight at East Henderson in Game 2 of the best-of-five series.
