“Fun with Fiber Summer Day Camp” will be held on Friday, Aug. 15, and Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Historic Johnson Farm. 3346 Haywood Road. A wide variety of weaving experiences will be available to choose from. There will be a morning session and an afternoon session each day. Morning sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon and afternoon sessions are from 1 to 4 p.m. Each session is $15 per student, limited to 12 students per session. The camp is led by the Heritage Weavers of the Opportunity House for ages 8 to middle school; adults will be allowed if space is available. Younger students may come if accompanied by adult.
The nature trails and grounds are free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The farm has picnic tables, a gift shop and resident animals that include two donkeys and their new baby named April, Jacob sheep and chickens.
Guided tours are offered as well. This is an intriguing, personalized viewing of the historic buildings and museum, and a visit with the animals. $5 Adults, $3 Students K-12, preschool, free. Times: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Brevard museum honors patriotism
BREVARD — “Patriotism in Transylvania” is the title of the July Display at the Transylvania Heritage Museum. The display opened Friday, July 4. The displays have been created through cooperation of several organizations.
Displays will include collections of loaned items from the American Legion and the VFW Post 4309. Several families have also brought in artifacts, photographs and uniforms of relatives who have served our country over the years. The items will be on display for the entire month of July.
Transylvania Heritage Museum, located at 40 West Jordan Street in Brevard, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, call 884-2347.
BLT to perform ‘Velveteen Rabbit’
BREVARD — The Velveteen Rabbit will be performed by the Brevard Little Theater Youth Troupe and directed by Sonia Arnold. The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Brevard High School auditorium.

Center expands mediation services
TRYON — The Dispute Settlement Center is expanding their mediation services to Polk County and needs volunteers who are interested in offering people in the community a way of working together to peacefully work out solutions to their disputes.
DSC will be offering an information session for individuals who are interested in learning more about our current volunteer opportunities. The information session will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24 at DSC’s new office at 2753 Lynn Rd. in Tryon, behind the Chamber of Commerce. Light snacks will be provided, along with the opportunity to meet DSC staff and current volunteer mediators.
WCCA awarded $25,000 grant
Madeline Royes, chairman of the board of directors for Western Carolina Community Action, announced WCCA has been awarded a Strategy Grant in the amount of $25,000 from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina to increase organizational capacity and address affordable housing needs of low- and moderate-income wage earners, disabled, and elderly in Transylvania County. The grant was funded through the Transylvania Endowment with support from the Connestee Falls Endowment Fund, the Lake Toxaway Charities Endowment Fund, the Richard G. Adamson Memorial Fund, the David and Ann Burchfield Charitable Fund and the Burlingame Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina.
Funding from this grant will be used to expand homeownership resources and services, develop new home construction, rehabilitate existing homes, construct special needs and affordable rental-housing units, and develop an emergency repair/fix-up program.

Archers to gather for competition
MILLS RIVER — Mountain Rendezvous with Powder Creek Traditional Archers will be Saturday and Sunday in Mills River at Joe and Linda Brittain’s farm. Competition consists of 30 targets to be shot on either Saturday or Sunday. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on either day and closes at 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. Score targets as 5 points for body and 10 points for vitals. All scorecards must be turned in by 1 p.m. Sunday. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Cost is $10 for individuals and $25 for families. Children age 6 and under shoot free. A barbecue dinner will be held Saturday night. For more information, call 891-3332.
