Lamb knocks off top seed, advances to quarterfinals

PINEHURST -- Furman junior Blair Lamb, a former East Henderson High standout, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women's North and South Amateur on Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2 after upsetting top seed Allison Walshe in the second round and then eliminating 16th-seeded Stacey Keating in the third.
Lamb, seeded 33rd, began the day with a 4 and 3 victory over Walshe of Westford, Mass., in the second round. She followed that up with a 20-hole victory over Keating of Australia in the third round.
Lamb will be facing No. 8 seed Garrett Phillips of Simons Island, Ga., in today's quarterfinals at 7:30 a.m. If she wins that match, she will be facing the winner between No. 4 seed Kristie Smith and No. 21 seed Marika Lendl in Saturday's semifinals.
The championship match will be held Sunday.
