Lightning strikes home

home on Grey Fox Trail in Henderson County was damaged during a storm Wednesday when it was struck by lightning.

Valley Hill Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Garren said lighting struck around 2 p.m.

“Lighting struck the meter box and started climbing up the wall on the outside of the home,” Garren said. “The fire came inside the home a little bit, but we were able to extingish the fire. It did fill the house with smoke.”

Garren said no one was injured.

The home, located at 44 Grey Fox Trail, is owned by Jeanette Schuurman.

“I was pulling in the driveway when the lighting struck the house,” she said. “The fire extinguisher I have didn’t do anything. The lighting knocked out my telephone so I went to a neighbor’s house to call for help.”

Neighbors said the lighting strike was so loud and bright that it startled them.

Rick Hodge with the Mountain Home Fire Department, who was in the area at the time of the fire, rescued Schuurman’s dog, Tyler.
